The EU will organize a conference on donations for the victims of the earthquake

The European Union (EU) Commission and the Swedish EU Term Presidency will hold an International Donor Conference on March 20 for people affected by the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes that occurred on February 6 in Turkey and Syria.

In the EU Commission statement, it was reported that the conference, which had previously been announced for March 16, will take place on March 20.

The conference, which is said to be coordinated with the Turkish authorities, will be hosted by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the EU Mandate Chairman.

In the EU Commission statement, the conference is addressed to EU member countries, candidate and potential candidate countries, neighboring and partner countries, G20 members except Russia, Gulf Cooperation Council member countries, United Nations , international organizations, humanitarian organizations, international and European activities were reported to be open to financial institutions.

STRONG MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY

“The EU and its member states intend to make serious commitments to provide further assistance to Turkey, for Turkey’s recovery and reconstruction, and to increase aid to Syria, its recovery and rehabilitation. The EU calls on other international partners and global donors to show solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria by making commitments commensurate with the scale of the damage at this difficult time.

Von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, whose views were included in the statement, stated that they will come together to support the earthquake victims 6 weeks after the earthquake and said:

“Our solidarity will continue to be as strong as it was in the first hours after the earthquake. We promise the people of Turkey and Syria that we will support them in the long term. I invite all countries and donors, whether private or public, to honor the memory of lives lost, the heroism of emergency response teams, and most importantly, contribute to building a better future for survivors.” .

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed sadness at the loss of life and suffering and said that Sweden, which is the president for the European Council period, will do everything possible for recovery.

Preparations for the conference between the EU Commission member responsible for neighborhood and enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Johan Forssell, and the Turkish authorities, were said to be continuing. and the invitations will be sent out soon.
