Europe awaits a new ‘lid on the nose’ Related articles

Next week, the UN General Assembly will debate an EU resolution calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and for a “full, just and lasting peace”. With this, Europe risks another roll on the nose’, thinks the BNR foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg.

Similar appeals via the Security Council have so far failed because both Russia and China are blocking it and this resolution will not be heard, according to Hammelburg. “It has no meaning, it is a political and moral gesture. It does not produce a resolution that is enforceable.’

A similar resolution was adopted shortly after the raids. However, countries that abstained from the vote far outnumbered countries that voted for. The EU is now running this risk again, thinks Hammelburg. ‘The great danger is that the result of the vote will be even more disappointing. Because many countries in Africa and Asia want nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.” This is why Europe risks ‘an eyelid on the nose’ again.

Ukraine will win

Meanwhile, David Petraeus, former CIA director and US military commander, thinks Ukraine will win the war with Russia. It depends on the strategic choices that are made, he says in an interview with CNN. “Petraeus says that if Ukraine continues to act wisely and continues to support the West, it should be able to win,” Hammelburg said.

Bearing

Meanwhile, European citizens’ support for arms shipments to Ukraine appears to be waning. This was reported by the King Baudouin Foundation on the basis of a European survey conducted in September among more than 13,000 respondents. The Italians have become the least enthusiastic (36 percent), while the Poles, Ukraine’s closest neighbors, still want to send military equipment with full conviction (76 percent).
