The Christian Democrats, who are in the national opposition, won the elections in Berlin. It is the first time in more than twenty years that the CDU is again the largest in the capital. The party received about 28 percent of the vote. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic SPD fell to second place by around 18%, German media reported after the polls closed.

The Berliners had to go to the polls again because the result of the previous poll in September 2021 had been declared invalid due to irregularity. Road closures due to the concurrent marathon led to chaos at the time. Voting forms were missing at the polling stations or there were wrong ballots. And in some districts there have been long queues and delays well beyond the official closing time.
