For the first time in 35 years, the border between Turkey and Armenia has reopened to allow for aid following the catastrophic earthquakes in Turkey. This writes Reuters. Turkey and Armenia have been at odds for decades, over, among other things, the Armenian genocide in 1915 and Turkish support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorna-Karabakh conflict.
The reopening of the border has allowed trucks with humanitarian aid to enter the country. “I will never forget the support Armenians have given us in times of need,” said Turkey’s envoy to Armenia Serdar Kilic.
An interesting detail: according to the Anadolu news agency, the last time the border was also opened was after an earthquake, but in Armenia. Then Red Cross employees from Turkey were able to move to areas of Armenia.

Turkish and Armenian leaders have long sought a rapprochement. Last year, during a European summit, a discussion took place between the countries, hoping to bury the hatchet. Ankara has not had diplomatic or trade relations with Armenia since the 1990s.
