Earthquake Western experts comment: ‘It will last for months’

The earthquakes that shook Turkey are closely followed by scientists around the world.

Alex Hatem, an earthquake expert with the American Center for Geological Research (USGS), noted that there were many aftershocks after the strong quake, noting that more aftershocks are expected and these tremors will continue in the coming days, weeks and months.

According to news from the Associated Press agency, Hatem said that in the earthquake that occurred yesterday, one tectonic plate moved to the west and the other to the east, and the earthquake occurred.

University of Missouri seismologist Eric Sandvol predicted the aftershocks would subside over time.

Margarita Segou, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey, also pointed out that severe quakes tend to be under the sea, while earthquakes in Turkey are very strong when the epicenter is on land.

Ilan Kelman of University College London described the Kahramanmaraş earthquake as “terrible destruction that we can see when a strong earthquake hits an area where buildings are unsupported.”
