Exit of immigrants from the EU: The most important problem is the Turkish border

The President of the European Commission, Usula von der Leyen, stated that the most important security task for the EU is to strengthen the Turkish border.

Speaking at the European Parliament session on migration, von der Leyen said the border between Turkey and Bulgaria urgently needs to be strengthened to protect the EU’s land borders. Von der Leyen said: “The most serious problem at the moment is on the land border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Here we can increase security with manageability and provide infrastructure and equipment such as drones and radar. We have done this before in Romania, Spain, Greece and Poland,” he said.

The EU official suggested that FRONTEX, which is responsible for the security of the union’s external borders, should also increase its activities on the Turkish border.

Some EU parliamentarians also wanted the fences on the Turkish border to be reinforced with EU funds.

Spanish deputy Iratxe García, leader of the Union of Socialists and Progressive Democrats group in the European Parliament, opposed this proposal, saying: “We cannot be the bastion of Europe. We must defend a Europe of solidarity”, she said.
