The United Nations Security Council extends the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus for one year
In the resolution adopted unanimously at the United Nations Security Council, “Given the conditions prevailing on the island, the UN Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) in Cyprus must be maintained after January 31, 2023 and his mandate must be extended until January 31, 2024”. expression was used.
The resolution stated that the lack of agreement on the island increased political tensions and deepened the distance between both communities, risking irreversible changes on the ground and reducing the possibility of a solution.
2 REQUESTED REPORTS TO SEND
The 15-member Security Council also requested the UN Secretary-General to present two reports, in July and January 2024, on the progress made in reaching a compromise for meaningful and results-oriented negotiations.
One of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions, the force has been on the island since 1964. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
