Second bullet wound in California: Chinese farmer shot his friends
The US state of California is experiencing the impact of armed attacks that occurred two days apart.
On Saturday, 11 people were killed in an attack on a nightclub in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, California. While most of the dead were reported to be over the age of 50, 9 people were injured.
The 72-year-old Chinese attacker, Huu Can Tran, was found dead in a minibus 12 hours after the incident. Police announced that Huu Can Tran had committed suicide by shooting himself after security forces surrounded the van. While mourning was declared in California after the attack that shocked Chinese society in the US, the state again witnessed an attack against Asian people yesterday.
Seven people were killed and one seriously injured in two shootings in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. The images of the moments in which the attacker Zhao Chunli, 67, was caught by the police were reflected in the American press. Zhao, who was said to have surrendered, was reported to have attacked ethnic Chinese farmers like him with two separate attacks.
While the motive for the attack is unknown, it is claimed that the Chinese man may have shot other farmers due to a trade dispute.
Asians in the US were celebrating various Chinese New Year celebrations, but many events were canceled after Saturday’s attack.
