If North Korea’s nuclear weapons program continues, such weapons may need to be placed on South Korea’s territory, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said at a meeting of foreign and defense ministries, reports the New York times.
“We could plant US nuclear weapons here or create our own,” the president said. It is the first time since 1991 that a South Korean president has officially declared himself in favor of South Korean nuclear weapons.
That year, the United States removed its nuclear arsenal from the peninsula as part of its efforts to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Yoon emphasized that it is not yet a direct policy adjustment.
Various tests
North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon six times so far. The last time was in 2017. Observers fear a seventh test is imminent. By 2022, the country will have tested a record number of missiles, including missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.
