US President Joe Biden says he does not know the contents of the classified documents found in his office. He also says he’s surprised at the discovery, which was made in late November but only became known this week.
The documents were found in an office he used at a Washington think tank. Biden was asked about it during a visit to Mexico City, where she is for talks with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian President Justin Trudeau.
“People know I take confidential documents, confidential information seriously,” Biden said. “I was informed of this discovery and was surprised to learn that government documents had been brought to that office. But I don’t know what’s in the documents,” said the president, who agreed to cooperate fully with the Justice Department’s investigation into the matter.
“Biden wanted it to be about emigration and the economy, but the first question from the journalists present was about the documents,” says US correspondent Jan Postma from Washington.

But questions also remain unanswered, says Postma. Serious mistakes were made, those documents should have been in the archives for years and should never have left the White House. And the documents were found just before the midterm elections, so how come we don’t know until January?’
Biden occasionally used the think tank’s office between 2017 and the start of his presidential campaign in 2020. The contents of the dozen documents, found by Biden’s lawyers who cleaned out his office, are still unclear. CNN reported that some of the documents are classified as “top secret,” meaning they contain sensitive information.

Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump is facing legal troubles because he took home more than 300 classified documents after his resignation. When will the FBI raid Joe Biden’s many homes, maybe even the White House? Those documents have certainly not been released,” Trump said Monday via his Truth Social platform, referring to the federal police search of his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate.
According to critical Republicans, further investigations into Trump are now out of date. However, a comparison between the two is not very easy to make, says Postma. ‘There are some differences. Trump had 300 documents, the FBI had to raid to seize the documents. With Biden, these are 10 documents that were voluntarily submitted. But the Republican line of attack is clear”.
Republicans to investigate Department of Justice
The Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to launch an investigation into what it calls President Joe Biden’s politicization of the federal government. The investigation is expected to focus on the Justice Department, the FBI and other federal agencies. They would go further than their book in the investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol storming and former President Donald Trump’s role in it.
