The move by the US and Greece to anger Ankara: they are in a hurry
While disagreements between Turkey and Greece continue on many different issues, another development has occurred that causes concern…
It has been revealed that the US-based oil and gas multinational ExxonMobil, which cooperates with Greece, has ramped up its offshore drilling activities in Crete.
“WE DON’T WORRY”
In the Kathimerini news, one of the most widely read newspapers in Greece, it was claimed that ExxonMobil made a statement to the Greek government: “We are not concerned about energy rights tensions with Turkey.”
It was noted that ExxonMobil cooperated with the Greek company HELLENiQ Energy to explore for natural gas and oil in the west and southwest of the Aegean island of Crete. According to the news in the Greek media, “we have learned that the American company is not concerned about Turkey’s aggressive expressions against Greece, and will also accelerate drilling and exploration activities in the region in a year.”
“IT WAS DONE IN 2025-2026 BUT…”
It was also claimed that the region that ExxonMobil will seek intersects with the agreement signed between Turkey and Libya in 2019.
In the Greek media news, “ExxonMobil has learned that the exploration drilling work to be carried out in the 40 thousand square kilometer area will take place between 2024-2025, not in 2025-2026 as previously planned. . . The company also signed an agreement with Norway-based seismic research company PGS. The ship will collect 2D seismic data off Crete in November and complete it in early February. If necessary, three-dimensional data will also be collected.”
It has also been suggested that drilling work will start next year based on the results here.
