“They will try to stop the rise in meat with imports”
Citizens, who are experiencing financial difficulties when it comes to inflation and the cost of living, have become unable to put meat and meat products on their table due to increasing price hikes in recent months.
CHP Manisa MP Ahmet Vehbi Bakırlıoğlu, who said that Turkey has become dependent on livestock imports due to the wrong policies implemented by the government in the livestock sector for the past 20 years, stated that the government is taking new measures to avoid the increase in meat prices.
OLD BUTCHER ALLEGED OF IMPORTING ANIMALS
In his statement, CHP deputy Bakırlıoğlu recalled the words of the former Minister of Agriculture and Forestry regarding the termination of animal imports: “In the previous statements of the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, it was said that imports of animals would end in 2022. Unfortunately, imports continue at full speed.
Raising the accusation that the Meat and Milk Institution (ESK) started working to import imported butcher animals to avoid rising prices of meat and meat products, CHP’s Bakırlıoğlu continued his words of the Following way:
“Now, it is said that the Meat and Dairy Institute is working on importing 50,000 butcher heads. In fact, it is alleged that the General Manager of the institution would have carried out market studies abroad with a company.
It was forbidden to import butcher animals into our country and only breeding and fattening cattle were allowed. Imported feeder cattle had to be kept for at least five months. However, they removed this requirement on September 2, 2022. Thus, they paved the way for the importation of butcher cattle.”

“DRIVING CATTLE TO DISASTER”
Recalling the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s statement: “Cattle population increased from 10 million to 18 million in the last 20 years”, CHP’s Bakırlıoğlu said that the situation in Turkey’s stables is not the same and that the thousands of millions of dollars spent on animal imports over the last 12 years reveal the problem of livestock.
CHP’s Bakırlıoğlu made the following statements in his statement:
“Livestock in Turkey is being dragged into disaster due to daily politics. Because the AKP’s livestock policy has collapsed. When you talk about breeding and fattening, how did the importation of butcher animals come about? Because the animal presence data is not realistic.
The number of animals in the barn and the number of animals in the records do not match. Animals not in the barn are registered. Dairy animals go to slaughter one by one. The breeder cannot find a calf to put in his barn. Live animals have been imported for years, and the result is obvious. The only solution they found was to re-import”
‘THE ANIMAL MARKET WILL BE FILLED WITH IMPORTED ANIMALS’
In his statement, Bakırlıoğlu finally gave the following words:
“It will be a hard blow for the country’s livestock that the calves imported in the fattening cattle import application instructions will be fed for 5 months. Animal markets will be filled with imported animals.
In this way, they will bankrupt the companies that raise calves and provide raw material to fattening companies. It is not possible for this government to develop agriculture and livestock. They ended agriculture and livestock with their 20-year policy based on imports”
6 QUESTIONS TO MINISTER KIRİŞCI
CHP’s Bakırlıoğlu submitted a 6-item proposal to Parliament for the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Vahit Kirişçi to respond, regarding allegations that the Meat and Milk Institution will import 50 thousand butchers.
CHP’s Bakırlıoğlu addressed the following questions to Bakar Kirişçi in his parliamentary question:
– As long as they are fed for at least five months in the commitments requested from importing companies of fattening cattle; What is the purpose of the abolition of the ban on keeping the fattening form, not napping, selling and/or transferring it to someone else, why is such a change needed?
-What is the nationalization process after imported fattening cattle enter our country and how long does it take to complete?
-Although the importation of breeding and stockbreeding cattle is carried out by the General Directorate of Livestock, what is the reason for assigning the rights for the importation of cattle to another general directorate?
Doesn’t this change pave the way for imports of butcher cattle?
– Since the change made to the Compromise will allow imported feeder calves to be bought and sold in animal markets, won’t it cause imported calves to take over the market?
– When making these decisions, have the losses incurred by companies that supply calf fattening material to companies in our country been taken into account?
