Kiev expects the European Union to include Russian state energy company Rosatom in the next round of sanctions, says Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. Reuters reports.
In a conversation with European Commissioner Frans Timmermans, Shmyhal indicated that Russia’s nuclear energy sector should also be punished for invading Ukraine ten months ago.
Especially as Russia has owned Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant since March, and Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree in October that operation of the plant will be transferred from Ukraine’s Energoatom to a subsidiary of Russia’s Rosatom.
Active collaboration
Shmyhal talks about active cooperation with European partners to provide support in four areas. “We are working hard on the demilitarization of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, but also on the supply of electrical equipment and opportunities to import electricity from the EU,” the prime minister said. In addition, new sanctions against Russia are being worked on. We therefore expect the tenth package of sanctions against Russia to contain measures against its nuclear industry. The aggressor must be punished for attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and for crimes against ecology”.
More severe penalties
While the EU has continued to tighten its sanctions, no concrete sanctions have yet been imposed against energy companies like Rosatom. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, has repeatedly expressed concern about the attacks on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Both Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of attacking the central.
