As expected, Republican Kevin McCarthy failed to secure a majority in the first vote on the new House of Representatives presidency. So more ballots need to be held.
It is the first time in a hundred years that the House, the US House of Representatives, needs more votes to elect a new president. Republicans won a majority in the House in November, but some Republicans think McCarthy is a man of old politics who should give way to a more outspoken candidate.
McCarthy needed 218 votes to become president and succeed Democrat Nancy Pelosi, but got just 203. The group of Republicans McCarthy dislikes is now trying to put forward an Ohio congressman, Jim Jordan.
