Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his New Year message on Saturday that China’s crown policy “maximizes the protection of lives”. He calls for more unity as the country enters a “new phase” in dealing with the pandemic.
According to Xi, China has overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges in fighting the corona virus. The president says covid policies have been “tweaked” as the situation and the weather required.
First time
It was the first time Xi spoke publicly about the revised policy after Beijing recently ended its so-called zero-covid policy, which it had been following for nearly three years. This was based on mass testing of the population and strict quarantine measures in which entire cities were locked down.
Since the strict rules were lifted, the number of infections in China has exploded. Many countries are concerned and have announced plans to test travelers from the country upon arrival. The World Health Organization (WHO) has asked China to provide more information on the severity of the disease’s symptoms, the number of hospitalizations and the situation in intensive care units.
