The US House Committee of Representatives today released former President Donald Trump’s tax returns. It’s a summary of statements from 2015 to 2021. “It’s a media thing,” says US correspondent David Hammelburg, who doesn’t think this will create problems for Trump’s eventual re-election.
Trump has since done everything possible to keep his statements secret. Despite this, according to Hammelburg, there is no law that requires a president to disclose his data. “The question is whether he did anything essentially illegal. He’s been carrying losses for years and you don’t have to pay income tax on a loss.’
Media thing
But whether Trump actually did anything illegal is a matter for the US tax authorities and not for Congress. Hammelburg doubts we’ll hear anything we don’t already know. ‘The way he has spread his losses over several years and across hundreds of clubs is exciting, watching how he has played. What we want to know is whether those leaks are real leaks. This is a media issue, realize we have known since 2015 that Trump was not a model citizen.”
