Hamas message to Israel: “We will intensify the resistance”
Hamas leader Haniyeh made a written statement after Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would work to strengthen settlements in the occupied West Bank under the government program he established.
Stating that the political and intellectual tendencies of the Israeli leaders and governments, especially the government established by Netanyahu, inflamed the atmosphere, Haniyeh stressed that the priority of the Palestinian people is to resist and ensure unity against the priorities of the new Israeli government.
Regarding the expansion of the Jewish settlements, Haniyeh noted that they “will respond to the settlement by increasing resistance and expanding the area of resistance, and will press by all possible means to expel illegal Jewish settlers from Palestinian lands.”
WHAT HAPPENED?
Netanyahu, who formed a coalition with far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties, announced the government program on his social networks before the confidence vote scheduled for tomorrow in Parliament.
In the program, which included the declaration that “Jews have the privileged and unquestionable right to live in all the lands of Israel,” it was stated that the government would establish and expand Jewish settlements in the Negev desert and Galilee, including the occupied West Bank and Golan Heights.
Jewish settlements built by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories are considered illegal under international law. The international community sees this issue as one of the most important obstacles to peace talks.
In the snap general elections held on November 1 in Israel, the right-wing bloc led by Netanyahu won a clear victory by sending 64 deputies to the 120-seat parliament. It is taken for granted that the coalition government formed by Netanyahu with far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties will receive a vote of confidence from Parliament tomorrow. (AA)
