Brazilians face a mystery as outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro appears to flee the country. An Air Force plane is waiting for him and his Planalto presidential palace has been practically emptied. The capital Brasilia is abuzz with rumors of departure.
Several media outlets say it has been officially confirmed that Bolsonaro will fly to the United States, but where exactly is still a mystery. Furthermore, Bolsonaro has not said a word about it. Various media outlets claim that Bolsonaro will celebrate New Year’s with former US President Donald Trump in Palm Beach, meaning he is now flying to Fort Lauderdale or Miami.
Not at the opening
The departure is special because his political opposite Lula da Silva will be inaugurated as president on January 1. Bolsonaro certainly doesn’t want to be there, according to Brazilian media. He didn’t congratulate Lula on his electoral victory and doesn’t seem to recognize it. Conservative Bolsonaro was elected president in 2018 even though he was virtually unable to campaign due to injuries sustained in an assassination attempt. He became the country’s president on January 1, 2019 and was not re-elected at the end of October this year.
Bolsonaro previously said he would retire from politics if he lost the election and has been virtually unknown since. According to Brazilian media, he also lost his wife Michelle. According to what was published Wednesday, he has already hired a divorce lawyer. The reason was allegedly a fierce discussion of Michelle’s support for a candidate in the senate elections that took place alongside the presidential election. Bolsonaro’s wife is said to have ambitions of becoming the new leader of the country’s conservative right.
