China deployed 71 warplanes during a military exercise around Taiwan over the weekend. Among the planes would have been dozens of fighter planes.
The Chinese military said the exercise was a response to “provocations” and “collusion” between Taiwan and the United States.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said a group of 47 Chinese military aircraft crossed the centerline of the Taiwan Strait during the exercise. This is the unofficial border between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. China has also sent seven warships to Taiwan, the ministry said.
China regards Taiwan as a renegade region that must eventually return to the rule of the People’s Republic. A visit to Taiwan is seen as recognition of the country.
South Korea fires warning shots
South Korea has fired warning shots after at least one North Korean drone was reportedly spotted in South Korean airspace. South Korea used, among other things, a fighter jet to intercept the drone.
Flights departing from Incheon and Gimpo airports have been temporarily suspended. Initially, the South Korean transport ministry only said this was in response to a military request.
