Bribery scandal that rocked the EU: Greek MP Eva Kaili spoke for the first time
As the bribery scandal, dubbed “Qatargate” by the Western public, generated shock effect, Eva Kaili, vice-president of the European Parliament, spoke for the first time.
The young politician, who was arrested and whose arrest will be decided tomorrow, gave statements in prison through his lawyer.
Kaili’s lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, who is preparing to appear before a judge in Brussels, said his client was innocent. “Their position on him is that he is innocent. There has been no financial activity from Qatar,” he said.
Regarding the money found in Kaili’s house, he said: “I cannot confirm or deny it. This is a private matter,” she said. “I spoke to her sister and the allegations that money was found in a crib as alleged are not true because there was no crib for a small child,” the Greek lawyer said. Dimitrakopoulos noted that Kaili met with her sister, Magdalena Kaili.
