Khamenei: There are security threats from Iraq to Iran

According to news on Iranian state television, Iranian leader Khamenei met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who visited the capital Tehran.

Khamenei, in the meeting where President Ibrahim Reisi was present, stated that Iran is pleased that Sudani has been chosen as Iraq’s prime minister.

Noting that “Iraq and Iraq’s security are interdependent,” Khamenei said that they “will resolutely confront any party that tries to undermine Iraq’s security.”

Pointing to Iraqi Prime Minister Sudani’s statement at the joint press conference with the President of the Republic that “Iraqi lands will not be used to undermine Iran’s security,” Khamenei said: “Unfortunately, this situation is happening in some parts of Iraq right now. The only solution is for the Iraqi central government to expand its authority in these regions,” he said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Sudani, on the other hand, affirmed that the two countries have historical and strategic relations, saying that the Iraqi government is determined to implement the agreements between the two countries and increase relations in various fields, especially in the economy. .

Sudani also stated that “the security of Iran and Iraq are interconnected” and that they will not allow Iraqi lands to be used as a threat against Iran.

As the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Emini continued in the country, the Tehran administration accused the Komele, PAK and IKDP organizations in the regions under the control of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) of “sending armed groups and large numbers of arms to the border regions to cause chaos”.

Since September, last November 22, Iran had attacked the headquarters of these organizations in northern Iraq with missiles and kamikaze drones. Dozens of people died in the attacks.

Komele, which Iran considers a “terrorist organization”, has holed up in camps in KRG-controlled regions for years. (AA)
