Mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya extended for one year
The member states of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted Resolution 2656 on the extension of UNSMIL’s mandate. According to the decision, UNSMIL’s mandate was extended until 31 October 2023.
UNSMIL’s mandate was extended by a vote of 12 UNSC members on July 28 for 3 months (October 31).
MISSION OF THE UN MISSION IN LIBYA
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is known as the special political mission established by the UN Security Council on September 16, 2011, at the request of the Libyan authorities to support the political transition process in Libya. the country due to conflict in 2011.
Most recently, on September 25, the Mission, led by Abdoulaye Bathily, is working with 98 local staff, 210 international staff and 6 UN Volunteers to end the division of military forces and economic institutions in Libya and acts as a mediator between the parties in conflict.
There have been two separate governments headed by Abdulhamid Dibeybe and Fethi Başağa in Libya for a while.
To resolve this problem, UNSMIL worked to establish a joint committee consisting of the House of Representatives in Tobruk and the Supreme Council of the State of Libya and reach a consensus on the constitutional text that would form the basis for the elections. (AA)
