Record transfer spending and coach fees increase in summer 2023
In the world of football, the summer of 2023 made history with record transfer spending. According to data from FIFA’s Transfer Matching System (TMS), total transfer spending between June 1 and September 1, 2023 reached $7.36 billion.
Of this amount, $6.24 billion was net testimonial fees and the remainder were additional performance-related payments. These figures represent the highest summer transfer spend in football history, surpassing the previous record of $5.8 billion in the summer of 2019.
European clubs accounted for $6.01 billion of the total spending, while Asian clubs came in second with $1.03 billion.
While $5 billion and $5.26 billion were spent respectively in the summers of 2017 and 2018, these figures decreased to $4.02 billion and $3.85 billion in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the outbreak. from Covid-19. But by 2022, spending had hit $5 billion again.

INCREASE IN ADMINISTRATIVE COMMISSIONS
Commissions paid to directors also increased significantly in summer 2023. Directors’ commissions increased from $494.5 million in summer 2022 to $696.6 million in summer 2023.
Ten years ago, in the summer of 2013, only 5.8% of transfer costs went to manager fees, while in the summer of 2023 this rate increased to 9.5%.
INCREASE IN TRANSFERS IN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL
There was also an increase in the number of transfers in women’s football. The number of player transfers, which was 386 in the summer of 2019, 529 in the summer of 2020, 598 in the summer of 2021 and 696 in the summer of 2022, reached 829 in the summer of 2023.
66 of these 829 transfers were made in exchange for a testimonial fee. The previous year, in the same period, only 36 footballers received a testimonial.
