Novak Djokovic fined
Novak Djokovic of Serbia has been fined for breaking his racket after losing to Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tennis tournament of the season.
Djokovic was fined £6,117 by Wimbledon, who broke his racket by hitting the net post in the fifth set of the game, where he lost 3-2 to Alcaraz.
The 36-year-old, whose penalty was deducted from the prize money he received from the tournament, told a post-match news conference that he had taken such a step on the grounds that he could not control his nerves at the time.
The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who picked up his first career Wimbledon win, prevented Djokovic from reaching his 24th championship, sharing Margaret Court’s record for winning the most Grand Slam tournaments. (AA)
