Proposal for a new format of the European Super League initiative

The European Super League initiative, which has caused great controversy in the world of football in recent years, has proposed a new format in which 80 teams can participate. In the statement from A22 Sports Management, one of the main sponsors of the organization, it was indicated that the new format was planned with joint consultations after negotiations with 50 soccer clubs.

Thus, between 60 and 80 clubs will participate in the matches that will be played in a multi-league format. These teams will be selected according to the success criteria they have obtained in their leagues and each team that will be part of the organization will play at least 14 games.

Speaking to the German press on the subject, Bernd Reichart, Chairman of A22 Sports Management, said: “The foundation of European football is in danger of collapsing. Now is the time for change. Football clubs find it difficult to see the future due to rapidly changing risk factors. When important decisions are made in which interests prevail, even if they have problems with sports and financial institutions, they cannot speak. They cannot oppose the system with the threat of sanctions. Our system will be to engage in a constructive dialogue with these clubs and ensure that bilateral relations are established on an honest basis.” he used his statements.

EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE CAUSED GREAT REACTION

Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham from England, Milan, Inter and Juventus from Italy, Atlético de Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid from Spain announced on April 19, 2021 that they have launched the European Super League initiative. Under the first format, the 15 clubs that were the founders of the league, in which 20 teams would participate, would remain in the organization permanently, while the others would be determined based on their leagues’ success criteria.

After harsh reactions from FIFA, UEFA and the sports public, 9 clubs except Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus announced that they were withdrawing from this organization. UEFA and FIFA warned that 3 teams that did not come out of the formation could face sanctions such as being removed from their affiliated organizations and national leagues, banning players from sending players to international matches. After what happened, the matter was taken to the Court of Justice of the European Union. (AA)
