Three days of mourning in Brazil for the death of Pelé
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, had a colon tumor removed in 2021 and was readmitted to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital in November due to worsening health. Last night, Kelly Chirstina Nascimento, Pele’s daughter, announced that her father has passed away.
A hospital statement on Pelé’s death included the statements “multiple organ failure as a result of the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous clinical condition.”
After Pelé’s death, the Brazilian government declared three days of mourning and the Statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro was illuminated with the colors of the Brazilian flag.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said: “I had the privilege that younger Brazilians did not have: I saw Pelé play live in Pacaembu and Morumbi. I saw Pelé show off, not play. “Because he always did something special when he got the ball, and that often resulted in a goal,” he said.
OBAMA: THE BEST ACTOR IN HISTORY
Former US President Barack Obama, regarding Pelé’s death, said: “Pele was one of the best players to ever play this beautiful game. And as one of the world’s best-known athletes, he understood the power of sport to bring people together. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who loves and appreciates him.”
WEMBLEY LIGHTS UP IN THE COLORS OF THE BRAZILIAN FLAG
The belt at Wembley Stadium in England was lit up in the colors of the Brazilian flag, again in memory of Pelé, with the statement saying: “Tonight we will light the belt in Pelé’s honour. His unique talent has illuminated soccer and inspired the world.”
The England national team, on the other hand, shared a photo of a match played by the two countries, saying: “One of the greatest that embellishes the beautiful game. Goodbye Pele. You will never be forgotten.”
ONE OF THE FOUR WORLD CUP GOALS TO BE SCHEDULED
Pelé, who won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970 with the Brazilian national team, scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games until his retirement in 1977. Known as the ‘Black Pearl’ or the ‘King’, Pelé is one of the three players who have scored in four World Cups.
IT STARTED WITH SYLVESTER STALLONE AND MICHAEL CANE
In 1981, Pele starred with world-famous actors Sylvester Stallone and Michael Cane in the film Victory, about the escape plans of Allied prisoners of war during World War II during a soccer match against the German national team in Nazi-occupied Paris.
In addition to Pelé, many famous footballers of the time participated in the film, such as the British Bobby Moore and the Argentine Osvaldo Ardiles. After Sylvester Stallone Pele, “The Great Pele. Rest in peace. This was a good man,” he said.
