Former President Trump has been charged with mishandling classified documents, he said on social media on Thursday

“The corrupt Biden administration has informed my lawyers that I have been charged, apparently because of the Boxes Hoax,” he said on

. “I never thought something like this could happen to a former president of the United States…I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!”

Multiple media confirmed the news Thursday evening. Trump said he has been summoned to appear Tuesday afternoon at the Federal Courthouse in Miami.

The unprecedented decision

comes after

a year-long investigation into whether Trump knowingly kept classified and top-secret government records when he left office in 2021, ignored a subpoena to return all classified documents in his possession, and whether he and his staff of the FBI to ensure that all documents were returned .

Trump was notified by the Justice Department on Wednesday, June 7, that he was the target of a criminal investigation into the matter.

The FBI had information indicating more classified documents in the former president’s possession and obtained a search warrant on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in early August.

Reports in recent weeks fueled speculation that an indictment was imminent.

According to news reports, Trump has relented

that he held

a classified Pentagon document after leaving office. Trump’s lawyers have reportedly been unable to locate the classified document Trump discussed, which related to military plans to confront Iran.

Other reports indicated that

Trump and his aides

could have

efforts to retrieve security camera footage, and that the special counsel’s team has asked witnesses about possible damage from the flooding of a room where computer servers containing video surveillance logs were stored.

Garland has adhered to precedent and has not overruled Smith’s indictment decision.

Smith’s decision adds to the
