During her speech at the D66 party conference on RAI, party leader Sigrid Kaag was interrupted by a young woman who claims she feels betrayed by Kaag and D66. “Thanks to your party, men have found their way into our sports, locker rooms and bathrooms.”
As Kaag speaks, the young woman screams through her. ‘Would you like to come here? Then you can say it too’, says Kaag to the woman who then takes the stage and shakes her hand. “What do you want to do?” asks Kaag. “I would like to say one thing,” says the woman. “I feel betrayed by you and by the people in this room.”
The woman says Kaag “of all people in politics talks about women’s rights, but if you don’t know what a woman is, you can’t represent women.” Under loud boos from the audience, the woman continues: “Thanks to your party, men have found their way to our sport, changing rooms and bathrooms.”
‘It is mainly the women’s toilets that are disappearing, how is this possible? This is not progress, this is regression and we will not accept it, ‘concludes the woman who then thanks Kaag for giving her the opportunity to have her say and then leaves the stage again. “Make an appointment,” says Kaag, “because you could have told the story differently.”
