US jobless claims exceed expectations

US jobless claims exceeded expectations with 231,000 in the week ending November 11.

Economists participating in the Reuters poll predicted unemployment benefits would reach 220,000.

According to seasonally adjusted data announced by the US Department of Labor, the number of claims, which had previously been announced at 217,000 in the week ending November 4, was revised to 218,000.

The four-week average of U.S. jobless claims, which is considered a better indicator of U.S. labor market trends, rose to 220,250 in the week ending Nov. 11.

The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the US increased to 1.865 million in the week ending November 4. (REUTERS)
