Yield-related loss in corn production

Chairman of the Konya Branch of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Burak Kırkgöz stated that there is a 10 percent yield loss in corn, which has increased the crop area in Konya.

Kırkgöz told AA correspondent that the corn harvest in Konya started 20 days ago.
Pointing out the loss of productivity in fields where irrigation problems are experienced, Kırkgöz said: “In some of our regions, the humidity in the product is high. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Konya region in the coming days. “That’s why our farmers are currently harvesting corn intensively,” he said.

THERE ARE 1 MILLION 860 THOUSAND DECARAS OF CORN PLANTATION.

Kırkgöz mentioned that corn was planted on 1 million 750 thousand decares of land in Konya last year and said:

“This year there is corn cultivation in 1 million 860 thousand decares. This year we cannot find last year’s performance. Because during the fertilization period, which we call the pollination period of corn, intense heat was felt. This heat created holes in the ends of the corn stalk. This will have a negative impact on productivity.

We estimate that the yield, which last year was 2 million 450 thousand tons, this year will be around 2 million 800 thousand tons. Of course, it is normal for the tonnage to increase as the seeding rate increases, but it should have been a little higher. The decline appears to be due to weather. “Our yield has increased compared to last year, but we can see that there is about a 10 percent decrease in our yield compared to the crop area.”

‘THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH QUALITY’

Konya Commodity Exchange Chairman Hüseyin Çevik said that between 8,000 and 11,000 tons of goods are traded daily on the stock exchange.

Explaining that the Soil Products Bureau made an appointment for the purchase of around 550 thousand tons in authorized warehouses in Konya, Çevik said: “We also made an appointment for 75 thousand tons in the authorized warehouse of our stock exchange.”

Çevik explained that although there was some yield loss in corn, there was no quality problem.

‘CAUSED BY AIR TEMPERATURE’

İbrahim Yıldırım, one of the farmers who harvested in Gözlü district of Sarayönü district, noted that the yield was lower than last year and said: “The yields are low due to the air temperature. The yield in this region is around 1 ton per decare. “There were holes in the diapers, we noticed it before harvest,” he said. (AA)
