Domestic tourism spending increased by 142.5 percent annually in the second quarter of 2023

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced household domestic tourism statistics for the second quarter of 2023.

In the third quarter, composed of April, May and August, 13 million 639 thousand people residing in the country went on a trip.

The total number of trips made within the country with one or more overnight stays increased by 41 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 16 million 84 thousand trips. Travelers spent 100 million 108 thousand nights in this quarter. The average number of overnight stays was 6.2 nights.

TRAVEL EXPENSES INCREASED BY 142.5 PERCENT

Travel expenses of domestic tourists in the country will increase in the second half of 2023. In the quarter, it increased by 142.5 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 47 billion 792 million 417 thousand TL.

90.6 percent of these expenses were personal expenses with 43 thousand 311 million 528 thousand TL and 9.4 percent were combined travel expenses with 4 thousand 480 million 889 thousand TL. The average expense per trip was 2,971 TL.

ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES INCREASE BY 235 PERCENT ANNUALLY

When examining the distribution rates of the types of expenses in total travel expenses in this quarter, the largest proportion corresponded to expenses on food and beverages with 32.9 percent, expenses on transportation with 26.4 percent. percent and accommodation expenses with 14.4 percent.

When the rates of change of these types of expenses were examined compared to the same period of the previous year, an increase of 197.3 percent was observed in expenses on food and beverages, 73.4 percent in expenses of transportation and 235.1 percent on accommodation costs.

THE MAJORITY STAYED AT THE HOUSE OF A FRIEND OR RELATIVE

The second place among travel reasons was taken by “travel, entertainment and vacations” with 27.7 percent, and the third place was taken by “health” with 3.3 percent.

Those who traveled in this quarter stayed mostly at “friends’ or family’s houses”, with 70 million 880 thousand overnight stays. According to the types of accommodation, “own house” occupies second place with 12 million 872 thousand overnight stays, while “hotel” occupies third place with 8 million 5 thousand overnight stays.
