US jobless claims fell short of expectations last week
US jobless claims came in below expectations at 204,000 in the week ending September 23.
Economists participating in the Reuters poll predicted unemployment benefits would reach 215,000.
According to seasonally adjusted data announced by the US Department of Labor, the number of claims, which had previously been announced at 201,000 in the week ending September 16, was revised to 202,000.
The four-week average of U.S. jobless claims, which is considered a better indicator of U.S. labor market trends, fell to 211,000 in the week ending Sept. 23.
The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the US increased to 1.67 million in the week ending September 16. (REUTERS)
