The army of the desperate grows

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute for the first quarter of 2023, it shows that the dark clouds over the labor market have increased.

There are 30 million 569 thousand people who are not included in the labor force in Turkey. When we look at the distribution of those who are not included in the labor force for reason, the increase in the number of those who have no hope of finding work is striking.

This figure, which was 1,572,000 at the end of 2022, has risen to 1,711,000 in the first quarter of 2023. There are 1,295,000 people who are able to work but are not looking for work, and 9 million 290 thousand people are busy with household chores.

THE NUMBER OF JOB SEEKERS IS INCREASING

While the number of job seekers for less than a year was 2,723,000 at the end of 2022, this number increased to 2,834,000 at the end of March 2023.

Of these 2 million 834 thousand people, the number of those looking for work for 1-2 months was 1 million 423 thousand, the number of those looking for work for 3-5 months was 857 thousand, the number of those looking for a work from 6 to 8 months was 429 thousand, and the number of those looking for work from 9 to 11 months was 125 thousand.

JOB SEEKERS FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR

According to TUIK data, the number of job seekers for one year or more is 765 thousand. In addition, the number of job seekers for more than 1 year and less than 2 years was 516 thousand, the number of those who sought work for more than 2 years and less than 3 years was 155 thousand, and the number of who searched for a job of 3 years or more was 94 thousand.

SERVICE INDUSTRY AHEAD

When looking at the unemployment data according to the occupation group searched, the number of unemployed in the services sector increased from 819,000 at the end of 2022 to 867,000 at the end of March 2023. The number of unemployed who worked in jobs that do not require rating increased from 672 thousand to 722 thousand. The number of unemployed among plant and machine operators increased from 271,000 to 303,000, and among managers from 46,000 to 65,000.

The population aged 15-24 in Turkey has reached 11 million 865 thousand. 2 million 657 thousand of these people are not in education or in the labor market. 152 thousand of these young people are illiterate. 1 million 73 thousand of them graduated from a school below high school and 589 thousand of them graduated from high school.

470,000 young people with a vocational or technical baccalaureate and 397,000 young people with higher education neither study nor work. 978 thousand of the idle youth are men and 1 million 358 thousand of them are women.

MORE THAN 1 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE UNEMPLOYED

According to TURKSTAT Q1 2023 data, 5,250,000 out of 11,865,000 young people living in Turkey are in the labor market and 4,195,000 of them are working and 1,555,000 are unemployed.
