In the past year, consumers and businesses sent 43 million fewer parcels than in 2021. This is the first drop after years of increases, the Dutch Consumers and Markets Authority (ACM) said in its annual monitoring of post and parcels. The peak was in 2021 when people made more purchases online due to coronavirus restrictions.
A total of 654 million parcels were shipped that year, up from 611 million last year. This is a 6% decrease. But compared to the 399 million parcels shipped in 2019, there is still a significant increase.
It is also surprising that the number of parcel post has increased by 1 million. According to ACM, companies are opting for this more often because it is cheaper and more sustainable. PostNL is the largest party in the parcel market with a 55% market share. DHL is number two and has 40 percent of the market.
PostNL also provides the universal postal service, a basic package of postal services. According to the rules set by the government, 95 percent of the mail in the mailbox must be delivered on time. In 2022, it was just 91.4%, reports ACM. The regulator is in talks with PostNL on the quality of the postal service.
