The danger of diseases increases in cereals
In the Konya Plain, which is considered the breadbasket of Turkey, which receives heavy rains in the spring months, the yellow rust disease continued to spread in cereals.
Although cereals in Thrace, Çukurova and Central Anatolia were also affected by this disease, the disease gradually reached epidemic point, especially in Central Anatolia. Experts predict that significant damage can occur in sensitive varieties.
It has been reported that yellow rust disease, which is seen in regions where grain agriculture is intense, can be prevented by using pesticides that will not be affected by rain.
TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY ARE EFFECTIVE
Selcuk University College of Agriculture, Head of Plant Protection Department Prof. Dr. Nuh Boyraz said the yellow rust disease was caused by heat and high humidity in wheat fields in spring months.
Saying that this disease stunts the plant by drying out the leaves where they blister, Boyraz said: “Yellow rust is a fungal disease seen on cereals. This fungus has its own orange colored reproductive structures. Due to this effect, grain does not form on the ears since the leaves do not photosynthesize. Even if it does happen, poor quality grain is formed.” saying.
MAY CAUSE SERIOUS LOSS OF PRODUCT
Boyraz said that there is a loss of yield and quality depending on the condition of the plant affected by the disease.
Emphasizing that yellow rust disease development is from the lower leaves to the upper leaves, Boyraz said, “If the disease gets to the flag leaf just below the ear, it causes very serious yield and quality losses. We advise farmers to spray before the disease reaches this leaf.” he said.
Boyraz stated that if the disease reaches the flag leaf, fumigation will have no benefit.
FARMERS MUST CHOOSE THE MEDICATION WELL
Mentioning the importance of spraying based on weather and weather conditions, Boyraz said:
“If we save the flag leaf from the yellow rust disease, we will save about 60 percent of the crop. If the disease is moving from the lower leaves to the upper leaves, continuous spraying is required depending on weather conditions. At this point, farmers should pay attention to the choice of drugs. They should prefer pesticides that are not affected by rain in applications to be made in areas where it rains constantly. We estimate that cereals in Thrace, Çukurova and Central Anatolia are affected by this disease, the disease has gradually reached the point of epidemic, especially in Central Anatolia, and very serious damage can occur in sensitive varieties.”
Boyraz added that there will be a loss of product and quality depending on the sensitivity of the cereal variety planted, and this is a situation that will occur after the harvest season. (AA)
