In the last quarter, PostNL has seen the amount of parcels to be processed decrease, as well as the turnover. At the same time, the postal company has been trying to reduce costs, for example by reorganizing the parcel department and optimizing delivery routes.
Turnover for the first few months of 2023 amounted to 783 million euros, down 3 percent year-on-year. The amount of packages processed decreased by 6.5% in that period. Net of costs, the profit was 4 million euros. This is much less than a year earlier, when the profit was still 34 million euros.
Satisfied
The top woman Herna Verhagen is however satisfied. You speak of a “positive effect of the necessary measures” that the postal company had to take to reduce costs. This includes measures to counter inflationary pressures and declining volumes. For example, the elimination of up to three hundred support jobs in the parcel department of PostNL. From 2024, all these measures should save around 25 million euros a year.
According to PostNL, the reorganization is proceeding according to plan. “All in all, we are satisfied with how the year has started,” says Verhagen. According to her, the economic climate remains uncertain, but for now the company expects to make a profit of between 70 and 100 million euros at the end of 2023. This is profit before interest and taxes. For this quarter, this profit still amounted to 7 million euros.
