Türk-İş: the hunger limit exceeded 10 thousand TL

The Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş) announced the poverty and hunger line data for April 2022.

Consequently, the hunger limit covering the monthly food expenses of a family of four increased from TL 9,590 in March to TL 10,135.50 in April.

The poverty line, which covers all expenses such as rent, bills, education, clothing and transportation, increased from TL 31,240 in March to TL 33,14.66 in April.

Total monthly cost of living for a single employee reached TL 13,165 in April.

A RECORD IN FISH, BEEF AND LAMB

According to data from Turk-Is, the minimum amount of spending that a family of four living in Ankara must spend on food alone has increased by 5.67 percent compared to the previous month.

While the four-month exchange rate was 24.65 percent, the exchange rate for the last 12 months stood out at 90.38 percent. Based on the 12-month averages, the exchange rate was calculated at 115.74 percent.

He indicated that there were high price increases in the group that includes meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes and oilseeds.

On average, for the first time, fish exceeded 140 TL, beef 300 TL and lamb over 350 TL, breaking the record: eggs cost 3.5 TL per piece.

In one month, the prices of fish, lamb, beef, chicken and eggs increased 9, 21, 25, 11 and 3 percent, respectively.

15-20 PERCENT MONTHLY INCREASE IN VEGETABLES AND FRUITS

A limited increase in rice and flour prices was observed in one month.

Bulgur rose 4 percent and pasta 5 percent. The price of semolina decreased by 4 percent. After the month of Ramadan, the price of bread in Ankara did not change this month.

In the fresh fruits and vegetables group, prices of salad greens such as green onions, lettuce and leafy greens such as leeks and cabbage increased by 20% and 15%, respectively, in the street markets.

In a written statement made by Türk-İş, it was underlined that the purchasing power of wage earners eroded due to inflation, saying: “The cost of living does not leave low-income people behind due to salary income that is insufficient . to meet the necessary expenses.”

In the statement, it was stated that food inflation has been high for more than a year and a half and said:

“This situation reduces the purchasing power of fixed-income wage earners, let alone getting a share of growth despite rising wages and salaries.

Consequently, low-income citizens cannot consume red meat, which has increased by an average of 50 TL in the last month and 150 percent in the last year.

Not only products of animal origin, but also the prices of onions and potatoes, which are the most consumed foods in the kitchen, have doubled in the last year. Furthermore, despite the fact that world food prices have decreased by 20 percent by falling every month for a year without interruption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The main problem today is the lack of livelihood.

Even in the purchase of food, the citizen, who had to maintain his life according to kilograms, grams and grains, has become incapable of shortening beyond his basic consumption.
