Sold for a quarter price of gold
In some grocery stores in Şişli, Istanbul, a kilo of plums were offered for sale for 1990 lira. Many customers said that they would not be able to buy the plum at this price, as the first harvest at the end of March was sold at the stalls in Istanbul at a high price.
“WE BROUGHT IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS PREGNANT”
Those who wanted to buy the plum, which cost 20 lire each, could not hide their astonishment at the prices that challenged gold. Manav İbrahim Bulut stated that the crop is new and the price will decrease with the passage of time, saying:
“It is normal that the price is high right now, since it is the new crop. Because pregnant women have a craving, we brought plums. As the harvest begins to increase, the price of the plum will decrease over time. This is the case with every new product. Because the crop is new, the price can be expensive. We had to bring it at the request of the citizens. Let us at least be of some use to the people who yearn. There are citizens with normal economic conditions, those who are sick and with cravings, there is demand”.
“IT BEGAN TO BE SOLD IN SMALL PACKAGES”
Emre Dikdoğmuş, who found the price extremely high, used the following statements:
“I don’t think a citizen with a normal economic situation can eat this plum. It has become difficult to reach the plum that a citizen could buy in the past. Now it is sold in small packages. I definitely cannot buy this plum at this price. It may be expensive for the first crop, but I don’t know how much the price will drop. If it goes down to half its current price, its price will be one thousand lire. If your weight drops to a thousand liras, it will be 250 grams, 250 liras. No one can give this money. I think the price is too expensive.
“I think these people are greedy”
Batu Kismet, who reacted to the price, said:
“I think this price may be misspelled. I think these people are greedy. I would not rather eat the plum at this price. I regret the money I paid. With this money, I can buy many products for my son. We can live even if we don’t eat the plum at this price. It does not matter if it is expensive for the first harvest. As citizens, we want everything to be cheap. Unfortunately, the world is going to a different place. The price of everything has gone up, but I think it’s because of the people. I am 44 years old, for the first time in my life I see that the weight of a plum is 1,990 lire”.
In Antalya, plums, which were sold at grocery stalls, were offered for sale at 10 lira and 1,000 lira per kilo. (DHA)
