Switzerland’s call for nuclear weapons
Switzerland has called for “urgent measures to reduce all risks associated with nuclear weapons” after Russia announced it would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared the issue on its Twitter account. “Based on reports that Russia plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Switzerland calls for urgent measures to reduce all risks associated with nuclear weapons,” the post said.
Emphasizing that a nuclear war cannot and should never be won, the post also included a call to avoid tensions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on March 25 that he would place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, saying: “We will do this without violating our international obligations regarding non-proliferation.”
NATO and the European Union (EU) said they found Russia’s decision to place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus “irresponsible.” The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also requested an extraordinary meeting of the United Nations Security Council due to Putin’s decision. (AA)
