The citizens needed onions
Onions and potatoes, essential for cooking and more consumed by low-income citizens, drew attention with their rapid price increases in the first months of the year. The citizen, who could buy vegetables weekly with 100 lire in previous years, can now buy only 4 kilograms of potatoes or 5 kilograms of onions with this money. The prices reminded me of the lines “Yiğit needs dry onions”. This high increase in prices was due to the emptying of warehouses and the decrease in production.
IT WAS 6 LIRA IN JANUARY
The price of potatoes, which in January was TL 8.25 per kilogram in Antalya, increased to TL 10.09 in February. In these first days of March, the price of a kilogram of potatoes reached TL 14.70. On the other hand, the price per kilogram of dry onions decreased from 6 TL in January to 3.49 TL in February. The price per kilogram of onions these days has more than doubled and has reached 7.84 TL. While the increase in the price of potatoes was 45.7 percent in one month, the rise in onion reached 124.6 percent. The price per kilogram of potatoes in the market rises to 22.90 TL, while dry onions take their place on the counter at 19.75 TL.
On the other hand, Antalya Commodity Exchange (ATB) announced the Antalya markets tomato, vegetable and fruit index for February. Thus, in February, the quantity indices were 33 for tomatoes, 50 for vegetables, and 71 for fruits, while the price indices were 1,401 for tomatoes, 1,544 for vegetables, and 989 for fruits. In February, the price of tomatoes rose 109.87 percent year on year, while the prices of vegetables rose 87.18 percent. Fruit prices, for their part, broke a record with an annual increase of 120.72 percent. In February, the tomato price was the third highest in the last 5 years.
Quantities decreased, prices doubled
According to data from the Antalya Commodity Exchange, the quantity of tomatoes decreased by 36.63 percent in February compared to the previous month. The monthly increase in the price of tomato was 43.43 percent. The monthly vegetable processing index decreased 24.56 percent, while vegetable prices increased 39.37 percent. Considering the months of February of the last 5 years, the vegetable quantity index decreased to a record level, while the price index increased to a record level. In February, there was a decrease of 2.70 percent in the index of number of fruit transactions and an increase of 9.70 percent in prices.
