Education spending increased 27.1 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year
The Turkish Institute of Statistics announced the “education spending statistics” for 2021.
Consequently, last year, education spending increased by 27.1 percent to 344.341 billion lira. In said period, the educational levels with the greatest increase in spending were higher education with 37.7 percent and secondary education with 28.3 percent.
The ratio of education spending to gross domestic product (GDP) in Turkey decreased from 5.4% in 2020 to 4.8% in 2021. While the share of public education spending in GDP was 4% in 2020, it was 3.4% in 2021.
Last year, the state financed 72.5 percent of education spending. The share of household expenses in education expenses was estimated at 22 percent.
Higher education constituted 35.6 percent of the expenditures made by state educational institutions and secondary education constituted 22.3 percent. 39.5 percent of the expenditure made by private educational institutions was allocated to higher education and 34.4 percent to secondary education.
EDUCATION SPENDING PER STUDENT INCREASED 25.9 PERCENT
While education spending per student was 12,311 lira in 2020, it increased 25.9% last year to 15,500 lira.
When evaluated according to education levels, the education level with the highest expenditure per student last year was recorded as higher education with 28,597 lira. (AA)
