Health spending increased by 41.6% in 2021 compared to the previous year

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) published the health spending statistics for 2021.

As a result, total healthcare spending increased by 41.6% in 2021 compared to the previous year, from 249.932 billion lira to 353.941 billion lira.

General government spending on health reached 280.22 billion lira, an increase of 41.5 percent. Private sector health spending was estimated at 73,721 million lira, an increase of 42.1 percent.

The ratio of general government health spending to total health spending was 79.2 percent last year, while private sector health spending was 20.8 percent.

Regarding the subcomponents of the general government and the private sector, in 2021, the Social Security Institution 47.2 percent, the central government 31.4 percent, households 15.9 percent, insurance companies 2, 6 percent, non-profit organizations serving households, other businesses had a 2.3 percent share and local governments had a 0.6 percent share.

HEALTH EXPENDITURE PER PERSON IS 4 thousand 206 TL

Current spending on health increased by 42 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year and reached 330.928 million lira. Investments in the field of health expenses reached 23 thousand 13 million lira with an increase of 36.4 percent.

When the distribution of total health spending by health service providers is analyzed, the top three places did not change in the last year. Hospitals accounted for the largest share of health institutions that requested the purchase of health care services and products, with 49.5 percent in 2021.

Hospitals were followed by those offering retail and other medical supplies at 22.8 percent, and those providing outpatient care at 9.4 percent, respectively. While per capita health spending was 2,997 lira in 2020, it increased by 40.3% in 2021 to 4,206 lira.

THE RATIO OF HEALTH EXPENDITURE TO GDP HAS DECREASED

While the ratio of total health spending to gross domestic product (GDP) was 5% in 2020, it became 4.9% in 2021. The ratio of current health spending to GDP was 4. 6% in 2020 and 2021.

Out-of-pocket health expenditures made by households for treatment, medicine and similar purposes increased by 40.5 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year and reached 56.342 million lira.
