The flood turned into a disaster: 120 people died
Secretary of the Ministry of Interior and National Government, Dr. Raymond Omollo stated in his press release that 120 people lost their lives in the floods caused by heavy rains.
Omollo said: “Four districts including Tana River, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera are among the worst affected. “Isiolo, Samburu, Kwale, Homabay, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Meru and Kisumu regions are in the high-risk zone.” he said.
CALL ‘GO’
Noting that 11 ministries worked together to combat the disaster, Omollo called on citizens to stay away from flooded areas.
A “state of emergency” was declared in Kenya due to the devastation caused by the disaster.
In the country where tens of thousands of people had to leave their homes, the government allocated a budget of 15 million dollars.
Authorities warned Kenyans against excessive rains.
On the other hand, a “state of emergency” was declared in some areas of the neighboring country, Somalia, after floods that claimed the lives of 96 people. (AA)
