Tough message from the EU on the “West Bank”
Von der Leyen, president of the European Union (EU) Commission, spoke at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Canada, where she was for the EU-Canada Summit.
Von der Leyen stated that the situation in Gaza was discussed at the meeting and she was satisfied with the beginning of the humanitarian pause, which provides for the exchange of prisoners between Israel and Hamas.
Von der Leyen said: “I would like to thank those who made this possible, especially US President Joe Biden, and Israel, Qatar and Egypt for their tireless efforts.”
Referring to the importance of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, von der Leyen concluded her words as follows:
“We must prevent the spread of violence. Peaceful coexistence is only possible with a two-state solution. We agree on this. The Palestinian people and their Arab neighbors need assurances of no forced displacement and a viable prospect of an independent State of Palestine, joined by Gaza and the West Bank, governed by a renewed Palestinian administration. To do this, he must put an end to the unacceptable violence of extremists in the West Bank.”
