The former president escaped from prison, 9 people died

In the statement from the prosecutor’s office it is announced that 9 people were killed and 6 were injured in the armed attack on the prison where Camara was held in the capital, Conakry, on Saturday, November 4.

It was noted that 60 prison employees, including members of the security forces, were fired for negligence in the incident.

It was stated that the search continues for Claude Pivi, who escaped with Camara but remains a fugitive.

Camara, who had been detained in Coronthie prison in Conakry since September last year, and Moussa Tiegboro Camara, Yamoussa Conte, Blaise Gomou and Claude Pivi, who were at different levels of the government at the time, escaped from prison at the first Saturday morning hours.

It was revealed that Camara and the four people in question were kidnapped by a special commando unit that raided the prison.

Camara and 3 people were captured on the same day, but Pivi could not be found.

Camara’s lawyer stated that his client did not escape, but was forcibly removed from prison by unidentified people.

Camara, who came to power in Guinea in a military coup in 2008, was arrested in September 2022 and sent to Coronthie prison accused of being the planner of the 2009 stadium massacre, in which 157 civilians were killed.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in a stadium in Conakry on September 28, 2009, calling on Camara, who was then ruling the country, not to be a candidate in next year’s presidential election.

It was revealed that 157 people lost their lives and many women were raped in the stampede that occurred as a result of the intervention of the security forces in the crowd.

Camara, accused of planning the massacre, and 10 people prosecuted, including 4 people who escaped, are accused of various crimes such as rape, torture and armed attack. (AA)
