Peace talks in Colombia suspended

Peace talks in Colombia suspended

Members of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) announced on October 16 that they were suspending peace talks with the government, with which they agreed to a bilateral ceasefire.

According to national media, the Central General Staff (EMC), known as the umbrella organization of the FARC, stated in its statement that the peace talks are suspended for the moment, alleging non-compliance by the State with its commitments.

The statement highlighted that the three-month bilateral ceasefire agreement reached with the State will be respected and said: “As of today, the issues agreed upon at the table have been suspended. “We will begin the internal consultation process with our peace commission and we will call on the national government to do the same.” The statement was included.

The statement noted that the State did not fully comply with the agreements reached on October 16 and said: “Within the scope of the agreements, the parties were to facilitate the daily life of society and allow them to live in peace and tranquility. “Our organization fulfilled these commitments, but the State did not.”

In the statement, which draws attention to the protocol agreed with the State, it is stated that EMC will be ready to sit at the table again on the indicated date and time, in line with the government’s objective of a complete peace policy.

In Colombia, the government signed a three-month ceasefire agreement with EMC in the town of Tibú, in the administrative region of Norte de Santander, with the participation of numerous representatives of non-governmental organizations.

It was announced that the ceasefire agreement would last until January 15, 2024. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
