Russia’s ICBM test set to raise tensions

Russia’s ICBM test set to raise tensions

Russia tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that the Bulava ballistic missile was launched from the Emperor Alexander III nuclear submarine. The statement states that the launch of the ballistic missile is the final stage of the tests.

The missile launched from the White Sea in northern Russia was recorded as hitting the target in Kamchatka, thousands of kilometers away.

The test came after President Vladimir Putin revoked his country’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The United States and the EU reacted to this decision by Russia and stated that it would increase “nuclear risk and tension.”

While tensions between Russia and the West have risen with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Moscow has recently accelerated its nuclear tests. Putin had ordered the Sarmat nuclear missiles, which he called “invincible,” to be brought into combat position.
