UN Secretary General’s words drove Israel crazy: ‘I should resign’
Israel, which has been the target of reactions for the attacks it has been carrying out for days in Gaza and which caused the death of hundreds of people, also caused a crisis in the United Nations (UN).
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said yesterday that the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 did not happen out of nowhere. Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting in New York, Guterres stated that the Hamas attack did not come suddenly and that “the Palestinian people have been subjected to a suffocating occupation for 56 years.”
Guterres said: “The Palestinian people have witnessed the gradual transfer of their lands to settlers and have been subjected to violence. Their economies were strangled. People were displaced and their homes destroyed. Their hopes of finding a political solution to their plight are fading. However, the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the terrible attacks by Hamas, and these terrible attacks cannot be grounds for collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”
THE MEETING CANCELED
Reacting very harshly to these words, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, demanded Guterres’ resignation.
Erdan, who shared on the social media platform
Assessing Guterres’ statements as “support for terrorism,” Erdan asserted that UN officials in Israel did not act impartially.
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced that he canceled his meeting with UN Secretary-General Guterres, saying that “after October 7, there is no room for a balanced approach and Hamas must be wiped off the face.” from the earth”. (AGENCIES)
