UN reiterates call for “humanitarian ceasefire”
A session was held at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the contribution of regional organizations and bilateral agreements to the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Speaking here, Khiari warned that if a negotiated two-state solution in Israel-Palestine is not achieved, the spiral of violence will continue and push the region into a years-long conflict.
“The situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories is a painful reminder of the urgent need to end the conflict and establish a humanitarian ceasefire.” saying.
“THE RULE OF LAW IS BEING ERRORED”
Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that human rights are being “rejected” in all regions.
Noting that there is a need to quickly return to the basic principles of the declaration, Bachelet said: “We see that human rights are going backwards globally and the rule of law is being eroded in armed conflicts.” he said.
“The UNSC CONTINUES TO LOSE ITS LEGITIMACY”
The Permanent Representative of Brazil to the UN, Sergio França Danese, stated that his country’s Security Council Presidency has reached a moment in which “perhaps the oldest and longest conflict in the world” has erupted again.
Noting that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict caused many loss of life, Danese said: “The UN Security Council has been ineffective. “It continues to lose legitimacy and credibility.” he said.
Danese noted that the UN Charter remains the best option and that the UNSC should revive its duty to prevent conflict and provide a peaceful solution. (AA)
