Guterres: We are on the brink of the abyss in the Middle East
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Guterres made a written statement on the developments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Guterres made the assessment that “We are on the brink of the abyss in the Middle East” and stated that he had two important calls.
Calling on Hamas to release the hostages unconditionally, Guterres said: “Israel must provide immediate and unimpeded access to provide humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.” he said.
Guterres stressed that water, electricity and other basic needs are depleted in Gaza, and noted that the UN has warehouses in Egypt, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, and can transport products there within hours.
Stating that both calls are important, Guterres emphasized that both issues must be implemented without negotiation. (AA)
